MA in International Relations and Cultural Diplomacy

The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Cooperation with Dubrovnik International University (Berlin and Dubrovnik, October 2011)
The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy and Dubrovnik International University (DIU) are pleased to announce the graduate Master of Arts program in International Relations and Cultural Diplomacy. Offered by DIU in partnership with the ICD, the program will combine the traditional academic components of international relations with a new focus on the role of soft power and cultural diplomacy in contemporary global affairs.

The Degree

While the study of political science has been a cherished tradition of academia, the developments outlined above demand the identification of entirely new theories and models. An understanding of the challenges faced by the contemporary world requires an interdisciplinary approach; International Relations and Diplomacy should not be understood only as disciplines of Political Science or Political Theory, but must also be interpreted from the perspective of economics, law, and other social sciences.

Further information about the program curriculum is found under: http://www.culturaldiplomacy.org/academy/content/articles/maincd/MA_Cultural_Diplomacy_Curriculum.pdf

Admissions
DIU and the ICD do not consider any one element of an application exclusively. Rather, our admissions panel considers academic achievement as well as personal qualities such as strength of character, motivation and the ability and willingness to take on new academic challenges. Additional factors, such as essays, letters of recommendation, and interviews are also a vital part of the admissions process. Our aim is to attract students from a variety of backgrounds and countries that will foster a unique and diverse learning environment.

SACR Conference 2011

The Material Culture (Re)Turn in Anthropology: Promises and Dead-ends
8th SACR Conference - Romanian Society of Cultural Anthropology
Bucharest, 22-25 September 2011
The study of objects and human-object relations enjoyed a growing popularity during the last years through the work of scholars such as Jean Baudrillard, Daniel Miller, Arjun Appadurai or Don Slater. Ulf Hannerz (1997, Flows, Boundaries and Hybrids) and Marylin Strathern (1995, The Relation) have noticed, that, in a curious way, the current surge in the study of objects, technology and globalization has similarities with the anthropology of the early 20th century, through the focus on technology and diffusion. Recent anthropological work in field of material culture and science and technology studies, among other things, have changed the way we understand nature and culture, consumption and production, human-non human divide or the relation between culture and economy.
We seek presentations that broadly engage such themes. Presentations may, but are not required to engage themes related to consumption and material consumption, but also bodily practices, mobility and migration, household economies, media and culture, science and technology studies, ethnographies of work and professional groups, environment and natural resources or exchange.
Researchers at all career stages encouraged to apply. The applicants do not need to be members of SACR Romanian Society of Cultural Anthropology (www.antropo.ro) in order to join the conference. Applications are open to all researchers with professional interests in the field of anthropology, from abroad and from Romania, members and non-members of SACR. We strongly encourage the participation of MA students, PhD students and young researchers.
Keynote speakers
Daniel Miller, University College London, UK, title TBC
Slobodan Naumovic, Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, Germany/Serbia, title TBC
Ana Vinea, City University of New York, USA, title TBC.
Anthropological films: In the second and third evenings of the conference (the 23rd and 24thof September), we will project anthropological documentaries. The list is still open so if you want to submit one film that you realized, please contact us, so that we can include you in the program.
Application process: We accept both individual abstracts and panel proposals. Panel proposals should have three or four individual abstracts and a short (maximum 100 words) description. Individual abstracts should have no more than 150 words.
The languages of the conference are English, French and Romanian. Abstracts may be written in any language of the conference. If you plan to present in Romanian or French, please also attach the English translation.
Individual abstracts and panel proposals should be sent to contact@antropo.ro.
Submission deadline: August 10th, 2011. The results and the preliminary program will be sent by August 15th, 2011.
Publishing: SACR will publish the proceedings of the conference in the form of an e-book, in association with Humanitas Publishing (www.humanitas.ro), Humanitas Digital Division. Only participants who also paid the membership fee for 2011 will be included into the proceedings of the conference.
Accomodation: SACR will not provide, but will be able to assist with finding economy accommodation in a few hostels in Bucharest. The program of the conference and the paper abstracts will be available on the association’s website beginning with 20th of August.
Conference fees
SACR members: 25 Euro (100 RON)
MA students: 20 Euro (80 RON). For the five best MA student abstracts, we will provide a fee waiver
PhD students:25 Euro (100 RON). For the best three PhD student abstracts, we will provide a fee waiver

Eco-chic: connecting ethical, sustainable and elite consumption
European Science Foundation (ESF)
Research Conference
11-13 October 2011, Linköping, Sweden

Researchers from the Social Sciences and Humanities are invited to participate in the Conference “Eco-Chic: Connecting Ethical, Sustainable and Elite Consumption”. This conference is organised by the European Science Foundation (ESF) in partnership with the Linköping University. The conference will take place on 11-13 October 2011 at Scandic Linköping Vast, Linköping, Sweden. Submission Deadline: 31 July 2011. There is over €25,000 in funding available to cover conference fees, accommodation and travel costs, especially for younger scholars. Further information can be found at www.esf.org/conferences/11361 or by contacting rjaffe@fsw.leidenuniv.nl

Chairs: Dr. Rivke Jaffe & Dr. Bart Barendregt, Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology, Leiden University, the Netherlands
The accelerating pace of many societies has given rise to counter-movements such as Slow Food, Analogue Living and the Wellness revolution. Such processes generally oppose globalization, seeking answers in nostalgic, neo-traditional and explicitly local solutions: the slow, the natural and the authentic. Consuming the natural and the slow is instrumental in creating and maintaining class distinction: examples include the middle-class popularity of eco-tourism, and organic and fair-trade food and clothing. As radical societal change towards sustainable development appears increasingly difficult to achieve, ‘green’ lifestyles and ‘ethical consumption’ have emerged as attractive alternative propositions in moving towards environmentally friendly societies and combating global poverty. Where previously the environmental movement saw excess consumption as the global problem, green consumerism now places consumption at the heart of the solution.

This conference invites scholars to explore the emerging cultural complex that we term eco-chic: a combination of lifestyle politics, environmentalism, spirituality, beauty, health, often combined with a call to return to simple living. This combination is increasingly a part of the identity kit of the middle class, the newly rich and the traditional elites. Specific cultural objects feature significantly in eco-chic: local, natural and artisanal goods are refashioned in terms of aesthetics and price to allow the gentrification of a back-to-basics, place-based nostalgia. We are interested in eco-chic as a set of practices, an ideological frame and a marketing strategy, that have emerged in both the metropolitan areas and the rural landscapes of Europe and North America, as well as postcolonial settings such as Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. Eco-chic also represents a rather conservative politics in its relation to sustainable development. ‘Political consumerism’, - evident in forms of ‘sustainable’, ‘green’ and ‘ethical’ consumption - has become a formidable global force, with consumer choices emerging as an easy-access form of market-based politics. Reflecting the neoliberal turn, the market has become an important site of politics, collective action and ethics, where citizen-consumers are mobilized to incorporate non-economic values (such as the environment, social justice, and human rights) when selecting products and producers. We encourage participants to explore to what extent “idealistic” forms of consumption such as eco-chic contribute towards ustainable, ethically oriented societies, and to probe the ways in which the market has taken over from politics and the public sphere in solving major societal issues.
In this interdisciplinary conference we aim to connect subfields within social sciences and the humanities such as elite studies, consumption studies, material culture studies and studies of environmentalism, drawing on disciplines including sociology, anthropology, geography and cultural studies. We seek to consolidate the convergence of these fields and we aim to do so in global perspective.

Attendance is possible only after successful application. Full conference programme and application form accessible from ww.esf.org/conferences/11361.
