42 years without rights – Western Sahara Right for Resistance

6th Solidarity Conference in support of the people of Western Sahara

(20 October 2017, Mestni muzej Ljubljana, Gosposka ulica 15, Ljubljana, Slovenia)
Institute for Western Sahara studies and MEP Mrs. Tanja Fajon, wish to invite you to the Solidarity Conference in support of the people of Western Sahara to be held on 20 October 2017. It is a culmination of extensive work carried out with a message that solidarity is and should feature as a strong element of internationalism.
The primary focus of the conference is to make the people of Slovenia aware of the common challenges facing the peoples of Western Sahara, relating to the denial of human rights and the right to self-determination as a people. As a product of international solidarity itself, we are committed to join the international campaign towards a tangible and lasting reprieve to the suffering people of Western Sahara.
The solidarity conference is aimed at creating a forum for public participation on these issues. The conference will be comprised of addresses and presentations by individuals from various backgrounds. Selected organizations will be given an opportunity to make statements of solidarity during the opening plenary. This will be followed by discussion sessions whereby presentations will be made on the key themes of the conference and participants will be able to actively engage the themes.
For almost 42 years now, the Sahrawi people are fighting for freedom and independence. For almost 42 years now, the Sahrawi people live on the run in families disunited and under the most difficult conditions in the refugee camps in Algeria and Western Sahara. Without any rights and largely unheard! The countless attempts to mediate the conflict between the Moroccan Government and the Polisario Front as the political representative of the SADR (Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic) remained unsuccessful. In the refugee camps in Algeria, the humanitarian situation is difficult. Due to the current economic crisis, especially Spain has massively reduced its support. There is particularly a lack of food, medicines and school supplies. In Western Sahara, human rights violations, which are not adequately sanctioned, are known repeatedly. The United Nations` peacekeeping mission MINURSO, already established in 1991, shall perform – among other things – the task to organize the referendum on the future of Western Sahara. To date, the mission however does not include an explicit mandate for monitoring and supervising the human rights situation and for protecting the civilian population. The MINURSO mandate is thus currently the only UN mandate where the protection of human rights is not part of the program.

Honour guests in representation of the Polisario Front Representative for Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia, Polisario Front Representative for Hungary and Embassy of Algeria

BACKGROUND
Since 42 years now, regardless of numerous UN – resolutions and an unambiguous report of the International Court of Justice, the people of Western Sahara are waiting in vain for their right of self determination to come true. In 1991 the Saharawis have agreed on a cease-fire and on a referendum, organized by an UN – Mission (MINURSO). But till today the Western Sahara remains the last African country, still appearing on the UN – list of not de-colonised countries. The humanitarian condition in the refugee camps in the Algerian dessert is precarious, the human rights situation in the occupied territories highly problematic. At the same time international actors are exploiting the rich natural resources in the Western Sahara. Problematic in particular is the fishery agreement between the EU and Morocco that enables European fishing fleets to fish in the Saharawian shore waters.
Is it possible to overcome the discrepancy between political realism and international law that influences negatively the peace process and the sustainable development in the region?

Participation in the conference is free of charge but registering is preferred.

Menjave izbirnih predmetov

How do we sense Ljubljana? A discussion about Sensotra’s sensobiographic walks in Ljubljana

With the advent of digital technologies in recent decades, we have also experienced a
fundamental transformation of our environmental relations. At the same time, environments
are undergoing various changes, which can most easily be seen in cities. Moreover, members
of different generations experience these processes in different ways: when observing
youngsters on their smartphones, older people are wondering what is this world coming to,
while the “diginatives” do not understand how can the elderly live in the past. Cultural
anthropologists and cultural studies scholars have found that the ways of experiencing the
environment differs among societies and change through history.

Researchers involved in the SENSOTRA project, i.e. Sensory Transformations and
Transgenerational Environmental Relationships in Europe, 1950‐2020, will study these
processes and relationships. The research will be conducted in three European cities, Turku
(Finland), Brighton (England) and Ljubljana (Slovenia). The following researchers will
present the SENSOTRA project: the principal investigator dr. Helmi Järviluoma (University of
Eastern Finland), local expert dr. Rajko Muršič (University of Ljubljana and University of
Eastern Finland), researcher dr. Laura Formenti (University of Milano‐Bicocca) and art
director of the Sensorium Theater Barbara Pia Jenič, while Blaž Bajič and Sandi Abram
(University of Eastern Finland) will front the conversation.

The debate will be held in Slovene and English. Join us on Friday, October 6 at 11:00 in the
Trubar Literature House (Stritarjeva ulica 7, Ljubljana). Your questions about the pairs, fitted
with cameras and microphones, walking through Ljubljana will be answered. Those interested
in participating in the research will also have an opportunity to join.

The debate is part of SENSOTRA project that has received funding from the European
Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation
programme (grant agreement ERC‐2015‐AdG 694893).
