26.3.2013INVITATIONASS Extended: Health, Body, and Consumption,29th – 30th of March 2013,[A]Infoshop, Metelkova Mesto, Ljubljana You are kindly invited to a student conference on the topic of health, body, and consumption, organized by Anthropology Students’ Sessions (ASS) Collective. Join us as a listener or participate in our fruitful discussions. Let us explore the present of our world and think about its future together in a friendly and egalitarian environment, uniting education and fun! In our globalized societies there are coexisting different medical systems and other knowledge about health that on one hand compete for their believers and on the other influence each other and due to on-going syncretism and hybridization we are faced with more and more methods and techniques of taking care for our health and body. This is not only changing the conceptions of health and disease and the perceptions of our bodies but it also influences our daily lifestyles. On every step we hear about “healthy life style” and “healthy body” – and about the ways to achieve them: which physical activities to pursue, what kind of food to eat, and which philosophy to follow. What is often forgotten in this context is that all theories and practices concerning care for our health and body are deeply embedded in economic and political spheres. A believer is at the same time a consumer and the experts’ advices are at the same time marketing.  The goal of ASS Extended is to share and confront different critical views on this complex system, to explore it from different angles, to teach and learn about different segments and aspects of it through paper presentations, workshops, round tables, films, and discussions. The 1st day will be dedicated to buying, eating, wearing, doing consumerism, and global change. We will be hearing about various new trends regarding healthy way of life and healthy or acceptable appearance and think about their position in consumerist society. We will discuss about the changing world and where do these trends lead us. The day will be closed by two episodes of a TV show, dealing with eating and food. The 2nd panel will focus on medicine. We will learn about how certain (marginal) social groups experience growing pharmaceutical market and we will expose some paradoxes of the meaning of “health” and “healthy”   .In the 3rd panel we will focus on representations of bodies and look beyond contemporary photography and visual material of humanitarian organizations. ...več »

He focuses on data mining and modeling large social and information networks, their evolution, and diffusion of information and influence over them. He uses sampled data to analyse online human behaviour and to predict future outcomes.LECTURENetworks, communities and the ground-truthThe Web, society, information, cells and brain can all be represented and studied as complex networks of interactions. Nodes in such networks tend to organize into clusters and communities, which represent the fundamental structures for understanding the organization of complex systems. Even though detection of network communities is of significant importance for computer science, sociology and biology, our understanding of the community structure of large networks remains limited. We study a set of more than 200 large networks with the goal to understand and identify communities in networks. We challenge the conventional view of network community structure and show that it is not exhibited by the large real-world networks. We then present a new conceptual model of network community structure, which reliably captures the overall structure of networks and accurately identifies the overlapping nature of network communities.(This is joint work with Jaewon Yang.)

30.3.2010Anthropology of Popular Music In Slovenia we have only Easter Monday free, so on Friday 2.4.2010 the lectures will be organised as planned. 12.3.2010AN INTENSIVE WORKSHOP - Performativity and Ritual: CrossroadsDepartment of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology organizes AN INTENSIVE WORKSHOP - Performativity and Ritual: Crossroadsheld by Radharani Pernarčič, Sonja Zlobko and Rajko Muršič, PhD, full professor/reader  27th – 29th March 2010 At the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in BratislavaAddress: Moyzesova 4, 813 15 Bratislava, Slovak Republic Costs: There is no workshop fee. A van will be organized by the epartment, which leaves no travel expenses for the students. Accommodation will be arranged at a hostel (approx. 30 Euro). The workshop will be in English (in case if needed, translations into Slovenian and Slovakian will be assured). In the time when contemporary anthropology increasingly dips-into and produces knowledge about practice and embodiment, while contemporary dance theatre faces numerous questions of performativity and dance dramaturgy, it becomes obvious that the two can establish a constructive interdisciplinary link. The up-coming workshop has its bases in a dance project Polne sob s priprtih hodnikov which was successfully carried out in autumn 2009 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and had thoroughly integrated anthropological research into a dance performance. Whether the collaboration proved such interdisciplinary work to be very fruitful and powerful, it has also raised many further important questions as well for anthropologists as for choreographers and performers. In attempt to further investigate options of applied anthropology in dance theatre and mutual efficacy of such disciplinary collaboration show the workshop will focus on: • Examining a new role of anthropologist in theatre – linking choreography, dramaturgy and performing.• The role of anthropology as a container of specific knowledge which can help creating coherent content and context by elaborating meanings and symbolization within an abstract movement expression. As a pilot project for integrated study of anthropology and anthropological researches, the workshop aims at combining students and professionals of both disciplines and build an international network, as a widely useful base for further collaborations. The reason more to start such interdisciplinary workshop in Slovakia lies also in the specific socio-political experiences, which both countries have been sharing – similar in the past and even more unified nowadays. Providing a wider context, these shared experiences can also be seen as a junction point of possible re-evaluations in both fields.   In hope to develop and articulate methods or problems, relevant for both disciplines,  and create a model of efficient practice of interdisciplinary collaboration, we are now kindly inviting you to join the workshop. *Non-performers may choose between active (performative) or “passive” (observing & analyzing) way of participation. For applications (or any questions) about the workshop, please send an e-mail with your full data (full name, education/profession, whether you are a performer or non-performer) to the following addresses: Radharani Pernarčič: rpernarcic@gmail.com or Sonja Zlobko: sonjazlobko@gmail.comTHE BACKGROUND: The workshop is one of the chain-actions in continuing attempt to combine anthropological practice and performative arts. In 2007 the organizers, Radharani Pernarčič and Rajko Muršič, PhD, first started by applying somatic dance skills to anthropological fieldwork methodology in a workshop at the 2nd Konitsa Summer School in Anthropology, Ethnography and Comparative Folklore of the Balkans, Konitsa, Greece. Later in 2009, Radharani Pernarčič and Sonja Zlobko established a successful collaboration between an anthropological research project Comparative analysis of Slovenian anthropology within European research space: past, presence and future at the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, Ljubljana and a dance-theatre project Polne sob s priprtih hodnikov. There, the application was reversed, ...več »

22.12.2009The 7th MASN Conference ´Ethics and Human Rights in Anthropological Perspective´!The 7th MASN Conference ´Ethics and Human Rights in Anthropological Perspective´!Conference takes place in Krzyżowa, PolandMarch 24th – 28th 2010Conference days will be divided in morning (papers presentation) and afternoon (roundtable discussions, workshops) sessions as well as fringe events (excursions, exhibitions, performances, films and other) in the evening. Each of the full conference days will be devoted to one of the subtopics: Anthropology of DevelopmentFieldwork DilemmasHuman Rights – Relativity and Universalism of CategoriesAnthropology of Development:Development, a term which evolved from western idea of progress is nowadays widely used to describe the improvement of human living conditions. What we would like to discuss is, how the idea of development influences various cultures, and how it is influenced by them, and finally, what is the price we pay for development. We are interested in comparative studies of the idea of development as well as in fieldwork experiences of young researches.Fieldwork Dilemmas:For this subtopic we invite papers, workshops and roundtables concerning the dilemmas ahtropologists face while researching cultures which axiological systems are totally different from their own and strategies they develop to cope with the disonance. Young anthropologists presenting their papers on their own ethical dilemmas during the fieldwork would be much favoured.Human Rights – Relativity and Universalism of Categories:Are Human Rights an universal set of principles valid for every human being, despite their creed, colour and culture, as they are meant to? Or are they just another form of western colonialism? Shall the antropologist protect these values or rather accept cultural norms which contradict them, no matter how oppressive they are? Is relativity of qualities all that we are left with in the multitude of cultures or can we speak about uniersality of some of them? On the third day we will try to propose answers to some of those questions.Structure of the Conference:The morning sessions will allow the presentation of 3 papers. Each selected presenter will be given 20 minutes for his/her presentation, which is planned to be followed by a discussion of up to 30 minutes. There will also be room for short breaks between presentations. The afternoon sessions are open for Roundtable discussions (approx. 2 hours long) headed by one or two selected moderators, who may provide further space for picking up on discussions from the morning sessions. Additionally there will be workshops (2-4 hours long) organized by selected participants.Furthermore additional events will give space for exhibitions, performances, the development of radio programs, film and theatre projects, or other ideas.Call for papers MASN, PolandApplication proposal and application listenersLinks:MASN Poland: www.masn-poland.cba.plWelcome to our website about Moving Anthropology Student Network in Poland and the future conference in April 2010.We hope you will enjoy visiting us. 18.12.2009Erasmus Mundus Master´s Degree in Women´s and Gender Studies (GEMMA)Erasmus Mundus Master´s Degree in Women´s and Gender Studies (GEMMA)Fourth Edition (2010-2012)Category A Scholarships for third country (non-EU) students and grants for third country visiting scholars The Research Centre for Women´s Studies at the University of Granada is pleased to inform that the GEMMA Erasmus Mundus scholarship application period for third country (non-EU) students and scholars to take part in its fourth edition (2010-2012) is open until 31 December 2009. GEMMA is a joint European Master in Women´s and Gender Studies selected by the European Commission as an Erasmus Mundus master of excellence and co-ordinated by the University of Granada (Spain). This inter-university and interdisciplinary programme is addressed to students interested in Women´s Studies, Gender Studies, and Equal Opportunities Policies. 19.8.2009Dialektus Festival: European Documentary and Anthropological Film FestivalDialektus FestivalEuropean Documentary and Anthropological Film FestivalBudapest, 2010, March 3-9.www.dialektusfesztival.hu Enter your documentary into the competition or into the student film competition of the festival! Submissions deadline: 2009, September 25.Payer submissions deadline: 2009, October 9. Some of the films we saw this March are still in our mind´s eye, however we are already preparing for next year´s festival. At any given time we may recall the neon coloured sculpture of Rhunama, the so-called Holy Book manifesting the megalomania of the Turkman dictator, as well as remembering the Palestinian sportsmen and –women practising with track tires for the Olympic Games in Beijing, or the overcrowded elevator of ’Chicago block’ in the outskirts of Antwerp, the mature hippies who refused to return to welfare society after the sixties and seventies India-mania…  These stories now belong to us too! We own them all, because we have seen them, we could laugh and cry, fret, remember and live together with people we would never have got to know without documentaries and the people who made them… We ate up the world this March, but that feast is long over and unfortunately (or even fortunately) our appetites are whetted again, and admittedly we´re already looking out for next year´s menu... Give us more! This year we had 47 films from 17 countries in competition, all of them were (and still are!) available in the archive of DocuArt Shed, one of the festival´s locations. Our aim for next years March is to surprise and delight the audience with at least as many splendid documentaries on Dialektus Festival 2010. For this we hardly need more than for auteurs to make their films and then… send them to us. From now on we’re awaiting entries for Europe’s most creative and keen documentary film competition! If you are a filmmaker and you have a documentary film made in 2007 or later, we hope to receive your entry before 25 September, 2009! Are you a notorious latecomer? Do not give up! It is possible to send us your application until the 9th of October 2009 on the understanding that you must pay a default fee. Like in previous years, we reserve a separate category for student films. Watch out: competition is pretty tough in the “Student Work” section!   Direct access to the application form: http://www.dialektusfestival.hu/doc/dialektus_entry_form_2010.doc  Attracting ever more attention both in Hungary and throughout Europe, Dialektus Festival pays special attention to creating opportunities for filmmakers and other trade representatives to meet each other and their audience on professional forums, targeted, thematical events besides creating an informal, inspiring, buoyant festival-atmosphere. All because we need documentaries and documentary needs us too: to discover its priceless values, to point out to the possibilities it carries, to celebrate it, to talk about it – to treat it as well as it deserves. This is our way of encouraging dialogue between European filmmakers of different countries and different cultural backgrounds, to boost the popularity and strenghten the distribution of the documentary film.Palantir Film Visual Anthropological FoundationH-1461 Budapest, Pf.: 64., HungaryTel: +36-1-403-03-52, +36-70-409-77-45info@dialektusfesztival.huwww.dialektusfesztival.hu 5.8.2009Contributions for publication in the journal Urbani izziv/Urban ChallengeDear colleagues, We would like to invite you to submit contributions for publication in the journal Urbani izziv/Urban Challenge.  Contributions from various scientific fields and disciplines will be published (e.g., architecture, landscape architecture, geography, sociology, economics, etc.), presenting the scientific and expert interests of authors in:spatial planning, urban planning and design, landscape planning and design, regional development, natural and cultural heritage protection, environmental protection, spatial informatics, housing studies, traffic studies, access for the disabled, etc.The contributions are subject to blind peer review and count as a reference in domestic and foreign scientific environments. The deadline for submitting contributions is 30th September 2009. The deadline for submitting contributions for publication in the section Presentations and information is 15th October 2009. "New Frontiers of Race: Criminalities, Cultures, and Policing in the Global Era," seeks to intervene in the discursive, material, and ideological debates involving criminalities, cultures, policing, and race in a global era. Associations among race, criminality, deviancy, and delinquency continue to suffuse popular representations in the media and in the social sciences. Research on marginalized, racialized, and impoverished populations have long been fodder for an academic cottage industry throughout the history of the social sciences. Indeed, the insurgent intellectual formation of Ethnic Studies has been distinguished by a critical intellectual demand for the visibility, recognition, and self-representation of the subjugated, exploring their repressed histories and the social conditions of communities of color. As such, Ethnic Studies was largely premised upon an explicit critique of the complicity of conventional academic disciplines with hegemonic representations that silenced and pathologized these same communities. This conference will explore new genealogies and approaches to deviancy, pathology and criminality that grapple with these longstanding issues. Do migrations, diasporas, borders, and other transnationalisms disrupt ideologies and discourses of pathology? Do the stakes in the debates surrounding pathology and related problematic representations of people of color shift as they ascend to the highest echelons of power? Conference paper proposals are welcome on the following themes but are not limited to these: identity politics and the politics of multiculturalisms; post-racial discourses and ideologies; "cultures" of poverty and/or "poverties" of culture; pathologies and gendered or sexual normativities; new studies and/or genealogies of criminalities, delinquencies, deviances, and pathologies; the politics of transgressions or non-normative politics; "cultures" of policings, deportations, and carcerality. Jasbir Puar of Rutgers University and Nicholas De Genova of Columbia University have confirmed their participation as our keynote speakers. Papers presented at the conference will be considered for publication by Identities: Global Studies in Culture and Power. All expenses - transport and housing - will be provided for persons chosen to present. Paper proposals should not be more that two single-spaced pages and must be accompanied by a short two-page resume. A copy of these materials should be sent electronically by April 30 to each of the following:Ramón A. Mirjam Mencej15.12.2008The city from below: call for participationMarch 27th-29th, 2009Baltimore http://cityfrombelow.orgThe city has emerged in recent years as an indispensable concept for many of the struggles for social justice we are all engaged in - it´s a place where theory meets practice, where the neighborhood organizes against global capitalism, where unequal divisions based on race and class can be mapped out block by block and contested, where the micropolitics of gender and sexual orientation are subject to metropolitan rearticulation, where every corner is a potential site of resistance and every vacant lot a commons to be reclaimed, and, most importantly, a place where all our diverse struggles and strategies have a chance of coming together into something greater. In cities everywhere, new social movements are coming into being, hidden histories are being uncovered, and unanticipated futures are being imagined and built - but so much of this knowledge remains, so to speak, at street-level. We need a space to gather and share our stories, our ideas and analysis, a space to come together and rethink the city from below. To that end, a group of activists and organizers, including Red Emma´s, the Indypendent Reader, campbaltimore, and the Campaign for a Better Baltimore are calling for a conference called The City From Below, to take place in Baltimore during the weekend of March 27,28,29, 2009 at 2640, a grassroots community center and events venue. Our intention to focus on the city first and foremost stems from our own organizing experience, and a recognition that the city is very often the terrain on which we fight, and which we should be fighting for. To take a particularly salient example from Baltimore, it is increasingly the case that labor struggles, especially in the service sector, need to confront not just unfair employers, but structurally disastrous municipal development policies. While the financial crisis plays out in the national news and in the spectacle of legislative action, it is at the level of the urban community where foreclosures can be directly challenged and the right to a non-capitalist relation to housing can be fought for. Our right to an autonomous culture, to our freedom to dissent, to public spaces and to public education all hinge increasingly on our relation to the cities in which we live and to the people and forces in control of them. And our cities offer some truly inspiring and creative examples of resistance - from the community garden to the neighborhood assembly. We are committed in organizing this conference to a horizontal framework of participation, one which allows us to concretely engage with and support ongoing social justice struggles. What we envision is a conference which isn´t just about academics and other researchers talking to each other and at a passive audience, but one where some of the most inspiring campaigns and projects on the frontlines of the fight for the right to the city (community anti-gentrification groups, transit rights activists, tenant unions, alternative development advocates) will not just be represented, but will concretely benefit from the alliances they build and the knowledge they gain by attending. At the same time, we also want to productively engage those within the academic system, as well as artists, journalists, and other researchers. It is a mistake to ...več »

We had 30 participants interested in learning about the complicities and possibilities of the region. I know that we managed to sharpen and deepen their understanding and they left with far more knowledge about the ME in general and the roots and present situation of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict in particular. NEVERTHELESS, we are constantly revising the programme to be even better, and have taken into consideration some of the important issues that were brought up in the concluding evaluation session, such as devoting more time for feelings; the young men and women experienced here situations that needed to be professionally addressed. As well as the knowledge, sights, voices and opinions, this course provided them with an emotional aspect that at times can be overwhelming.  This summer we had one group process meeting that was very good but because of the need expressed by the participants, we have decided that next year there will be three such meetings during the five weeks programme that will allow the participants to discuss the emotional aspects. With a Certified Group Facilitator they will have an opportunity to talk about their feelings in a free manner, to discuss some of the conflicts this course brings up in each of them and to give them an opportunity to listen to other group members. Another thing that was brought up and will be handled differently in the next summer programme is that the tours were too “touristy” and didn´t ...več »
