Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology was established in 1940 and comprises various fields in anthropological and ethnological studies. In 2018, it has 21 members of staff (11 teachers, two teaching assistants, five researchers). The department has its own specialised library (with more than 30.000 units) and an archive EtnoInfoLab (http://www.etnoinfolab.org/).

The teaching and research staff is involved in national and international research programmes and projects and regularly present their research at conferences and in scientific publications. The department collaborates with other academic institutions in Slovenia, Europe and some non-European countries, providing exchanges for students and teachers, researchers, and staff members. Among these are ethnological and anthropological research, museum and local institutions in Slovenia (Institutes of Slovenian Ethnology, Ethnomusicology, Slovenian Migration and Anthropological and Spatial Studies at ZRC SAZU, the Slovenian Ethnographic museum, the Institute of Public Health, Institute for Multicultural Research, the Urban Jarnik Slovene Ethnological Institute in Klagenfurt etc.). Most notably, the department collaborates with other universities through mobility programmes, such as Erasmus+ (over 40 bilateral agreements), NFM, CEEPUS networks or as visiting professors. With seven other European universities, the department offers a joint MA degree in social and cultural anthropology CREOLE: Cultural Differences and Transnational Processes (https://creole.univie.ac.at/). Members of the department are also active in national and international ethnological and anthropological associations.

The department offers the first-cycle study programme in Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, the MA programme in Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, the Joint MA programme CREOLE and the PhD study programme in Ethnology, Cultural and Social Anthropology.
